Our opportunity

The Marine Underwriter – Marine Specialist is responsible for evaluating, analysing, and underwriting marine insurance risks, including cargo, hull, and liability policies, as well as providing specialist technical advice in relation to marine insurance. The role requires a strong technical understanding of marine operations, risk assessment, and policy wording to ensure profitable underwriting while delivering excellent client service.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

 

  • Technical Advice: Providing technical insurance advice to ensure that technical and operational underwriting standards, procedures and controls are complied with.
  • Risk Assessment: Analyse and assess risks associated with marine insurance proposals, including cargo, hull, and marine liability.
  • Policy Underwriting: Within delegated authority, review submissions, determine coverage, set premiums, and draft policy terms and conditions in line with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Portfolio Management: Monitor and manage the performance of the allocated marine insurance portfolio, ensuring profitability, including credit control and compliance.
  • Business Retention and New Business: Maintain and enhance broker relationships to renew existing portfolio and generate new business opportunities.
  • Client Interaction: Liaise with brokers to gather information, negotiate terms, and provide expert advice on marine insurance products.
  • Claims Support: Collaborate with claims teams to review and analyze claims, providing technical input and recommendations as required.
  • Market Interaction: Stay updated on market trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes affecting marine insurance.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate underwriting records, reports, and documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with team underwriters and others to share knowledge and best practices.

 

Qualification & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Typically holds relevant professional designation
  • At least 5-10 years’ experience as Subject Matter Expert
  • Demonstrates advanced technical product knowledge and skills reflective of a seasoned practitioner who has progressed within underwriting positions of increasing responsibility; typically seen in six or more years of related experience. Has a high level of UW authority and involved in trade & Industry bodies for area of specialism
  • Travel as required to support Distribution and customer groups
  • Demonstrate language expertise relative to your business stakeholder/ customer base
  • Comply with Industry Regulatory requirement, Company and Best Practice Underwriting Policies as well as local regulatory & industry requirements.
