Job purpose

The role is responsible for developing and implementing the business strategy, identifying opportunities for profitable growth and retaining profitable customers. This role develops and manages strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including significant business partners, distribution channels, customers, regulatory bodies, and industry associations. It is also responsible for leading and directing the business's operations. Aligned with the company’s guiding principles and behaviours, this role fosters a high-performance culture within the organisation, inspires others to excel, shapes an innovative future for the organisation, and builds the next generation of talent. This role is responsible for Bryte Risk Services Botswana, which comprises more than 40 employees and 5 to 10 direct executive reports.

Requirements

Key Accountabilities

Strategy development and implementation

  • Develop and implement the business strategy and plan for Bryte Risk Services Botswana
  • Direct the Company to obtain optimal prioritisation of all proposed sales and underwriting initiatives for profitable growth, given the market and competitive landscape
  • Influence the decisions around the development of sales channels by participating in decisions around new and current channels and challenging the assumptions presented on proposed new channels.
  • Cultivate a customer-centric culture through continuous communication of a customer service strategy to ensure customer orientation and focus across the Company.
  • Conduct in-depth investigations where recurring issues related to the sales or underwriting performance are identified to ensure that corrective and preventative measures are implemented.
  • Ensure sales and underwriting planning are linked to optimal customer experience.
  • Set, optimise, and align the governance framework to ensure alignment with strategy and optimal customer experience.
  • Develop and sign off all financial business plans for the Company across gross written premium, expenses and loss ratios to achieve the targeted combined ratio.
  • Oversee company operations to ensure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective delivery.
  • Manage the effective utilisation and leveraging of shared services platforms, ensuring effective delivery of all technical and service support across relevant business divisions
  • With HR development and management of the Company’s talent and succession planning.

Performance Management

  • Protect, defend, and retain the current portfolio.
  • Establish and drive the implementation of a strategy to enhance and optimise growth, considering the optimal channel and customer experience.
  • Meet or exceed agreed business plans.
  • Manage all loss ratios and profitability across the business and implement plans in terms of corrective action.
  • Embed strong and sound underwriting principles across the Company with ongoing superior risk selection as a priority.
  • Implement swift action to avoid over-commitments and underwriting deviations.
  • Implement a coherent strategy to create healthy relationships and improve the Company’s reputation.

Stakeholder Management

Internal & External

  • Establish stakeholder needs and expectations to develop effective stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Exploit the different means of engagement activities to influence an inclusive approach that incorporates both the formal and informal stakeholder groups.
  • Update the leadership and employees monthly and provide operational input on the business performance.
  • Meet with brokers regularly.
  • Engage with Executive colleagues frequently and Board Members quarterly or as and when required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Commerce/Science/ Business Administration/Banking/Finance
  • Post Graduate Degree / MBA Advantageous
  • 10-15 Years of non-life insurance industry experience.
  • 10 Years’ experience in a senior management role.
  • Experience with regard to the development of sales and distribution strategies, including the development of new distribution channels.

Knowledge

  • Sound understanding and knowledge of the non-life Insurance market
  • Sound knowledge of statutory and legislative requirements
  • Sound knowledge of the intermediary market
  • Good technical knowledge and understanding of underwriting principles
  • Experience with distribution channels and broker development
  • Financial management

  • Strategic/Senior-Develops and manages the strategic outputs of departments to achieve organisational strategy. Takes responsibility for the results of tactical managers and drives deliverables quarterly and annually. Ensures there is an alignment of outcomes to organisational strategy.
